Astoria has an enormous wealth of resources and cultures. To quote the District Manager of Community Board 1, George Delis, "There are 118 different nationalities living in harmony in Astoria." That's more culture in this few mile radius than in the entire state of Kansas!
On any given block you'll find food venues of several ethnicities, residents from each end of the socio-economic spectrum, and a few stray cats. On the same block, you will hear Euro Pop, Latin Music, Acoustic Folk Guitar, Tech Beats, and Bangladeshi Music resonating from apartment windows. Strolling through the supermarket, you'll overhear more accents than you can count. These are the many faces of Astoria . . .
MyAstoria.com has only scratched the surface of all Astoria has to offer. As we wrap up our initial stage of development (our first day online was June 19th), we will now turn to our growing community of 100+ Members for collaboration and continuing support. We want this site to become a microcosm for all that North-Western Queens has to offer, not only for the people who are already familiar with the area, but for the people who aren't here yet and are curious.
Every day, more people move into Astoria and LIC from places all over the earth -- Manhattan, the Dominican Republic,. Ohio, Australia, you name it. People hear great things about Astoria, and word of mouth is powerful. We too heard great things about Astoria before we settled here. But still, to date, there is not one definitive online resource that shows today's Astoria for what it really is. And now that's our job, as a community.
We are asking all of our members and visitors to post 3 of their favorite and least favorite things about Astoria in our forums. We have started a thread for this dialogue specifically for this purpose. And don't hesitate to vote on this week's poll which addresses a similar theme. The winner of this poll will become the subject of a feature length MyAstoria news article.
Next, we will be hitting the streets and interviewing people all over Astoria, asking a similar question. When we feel we have covered enough points of view, our intention is to compile a comprehensive list of quotes and opinions about the TRUTH about living in Astoria.
This should be released about the same time our marketing campaign begins, targeting both Astoria's current and future residents. Our goal is to make this site truly the best resource for our community. But we need your help.
