WHY: Local groups in Astoria and Long Island City recently met for the first time to begin envisioning the type of change they'd like to see in the seven parks that line the Queens waterfront. Through grants from Starbucks Coffee Company, groups were given the opportunity to collaborate on an event. Groups range from the well-known Socrates Sculpture Park to "Just Food", which supports local sustainable agriculture, and projects are as diverse as an educational puppet show, an ecological circus, and a sensory garden. The day's events also include a waterfront parks walking tour and free canoe rides for the first time ever in the region.
